“Having been trained by Plan Uganda in 2009 I became a forbearer of Sanmark.” From a Subcounty without CLTS in Tororo district Mathias Othieno became the hope for latrine promotion in Nagongera Subcounty. Utilizing his skills Mathias has engaged in the construction of 30 slabs of which 28 are in use.

“After the training out of 5 masons trained I was the only one who remained active. I moved door to door using promotion materials Plan Uganda had made. I talked to people in the community, guiding them on the importance of toilet use and it paid off,” he explains.

Mathias secret for Sanmark lies in sensitizing the community and providing his labour. “My customers provide the materials, the iron bars, sand, cement and I give the labour.” He notes. Additional Mathias points out that he is nurturing 2 masons into the skill of slab construction and latrine building.
